There’s a lot to learn about orthodontics – it’s why you leave the treatment to the pros. Not seeing an answer to your question? Give us a call!

What is an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists are dentists who have gone on to further education and specialize in a specific area of dental health. At Diamond Plus Orthodontics, we are your experienced Chicago orthodontist helping you achieve the smile of your dreams.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Whether you use braces or Invisalign, gentle pressure is applied to your teeth to move their position and guide them into a healthy spot.

Do I need braces or Invisalign?

There are many reasons to consider braces or Invisalign such as crooked or crowded teeth, spaces or gaps in your smile, misaligned bite, difficulty flossing between your teeth, or clicking in your jaw.

Do braces hurt?

While braces shouldn’t hurt, it isn’t uncommon to experience mild discomfort within the first few days of having them on or right after certain appointments when wires are tightened. If you are experiencing any discomfort, check out our care guide and emergencies resource or give us a call.

How much do braces and Invisalign cost?

All treatment plans are custom-built for our patients based on their individual needs and goals. At your free consultation, we’ll review your treatment fees based on the plan you and your orthodontist design.

What happens when I am done with treatment?

At the end of treatment, you will receive retainers to wear at nighttime for a lifetime to keep your teeth from shifting back to their original place.

When should my child visit an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends your child’s first visit to an orthodontist is at age 7 before all adult teeth have erupted. You can visit an orthodontist at any age and we’ll always be happy to help you start your smile journey!

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Every smile is different, meaning every treatment plan is different. We can give you a more precise timeline for treatment at your free consultation, however, most orthodontic treatment takes 12-18 months.

What are braces?

Braces are orthodontic appliances used to straighten your smile by applying gentle, steady pressure to your teeth. They consist of wires, brackets, and elastics, all working together to give you a healthy, beautiful smile.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Invisalign is a safe and comfortable alternative to traditional braces, and much like braces, you may experience mild discomfort as you get used to your new smile accessories. The soreness shouldn’t linger but may return occasionally as you change your aligners or if you have not been wearing them as prescribed. If your Invisalign is causing a significant amount of discomfort, give us a call and we will ensure the trays are fitting your smile correctly.

Can I still play a sport with braces?

Yes! We recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your smile.

I had braces and my teeth shifted. Can Invisalign fix it?

Yes! This is a common occurrence we see and Invisalign is a great solution.

Should I see a general dentist during treatment?

Yes! Orthodontics is a collaborative effort between you and your orthodontists, as well as your general dentist. Make sure you’re still visiting your dentist for cleanings every 6 months.

Should I brush my teeth more often during orthodontic treatment?

Yes! Dental hygiene is incredibly important during your orthodontic treatment to avoid cavities and keep your dental appliances safe and clean. Make sure you’re brushing after you eat, and floss at least once a day!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the industry’s leading provider of clear aligners designed to comfortably and discreetly straighten your smile.

Am I too old for braces or Invisalign?

No! You are never too old to achieve the smile of your dreams.

Can I still play an instrument with braces?

Yes! It may take some time to adjust to the way your mouth feels with braces, but that should not hinder your ability to play an instrument.
