Benefits of Braces

Everyone knows that at the end of their braces treatment, they will have straighter teeth. However, did you know there are more benefits to braces beyond the final straight smile? Orthodontic treatment can correct alignment issues such as overbites, underbites, cross-bites, and open bites. Correcting these issues can reduce pain, allow for easier chewing and improve your quality of sleep.

Improved Confidence

Crooked teeth or bad bites can take a hit at one’s self-confidence, often leading to shying away from smiling or doing a closed-mouth smile. A beautiful smile from Diamond Plus Orthodontics can provide self-confidence and help Chicago patients love their smile!

Improved Oral Health

Crooked or overlapping teeth can make it more challenging to maintain your oral health. When teeth are misaligned, simple tasks like brushing and flossing can become more complex and less effective. After orthodontic treatment, patients can more easily complete these daily tasks to ensure their smile is healthy.

Improved Overall Health

Did you know that your oral health can greatly affect your overall health? It’s true! Crowded and crooked teeth can increase the risk of gum disease, which means the bacteria can enter your bloodstream and may create other issues. A misaligned jaw can create difficulty with chewing which will make every meal time more difficult. Straighter teeth can help alleviate these issues – prevention is the best remedy.

Improved Sleep

Did you know that the position of the lower jaw directly impacts your breathing? Being able to breathe, or not breathe freely, affects your quality of sleep. Orthodontic treatment can help improve breathing through your nose and greatly improve your sleep.

Improved Speech

Speech is formed by the placement of your teeth within the mouth. When misaligned teeth stay, it can make it more difficult to pronounce words and sounds which can lead to whistling. When the teeth are properly aligned, your speech will be more fluid while reducing speech impediments (and boosting confidence!).

Types of Braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common. They are made of high-grade stainless steel while straightening your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With traditional metal braces, you have the option to add colored elastics (rubber bands).

Self-ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces, but they do not require elastics. They have the option of traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. Using a specialized clip to keep the elastic in place, the clip helps reduce the amount of pressure placed on the teeth.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional metal braces but are made of clear, tooth-colored materials, and are therefore less visible on your teeth. Ceramic braces are larger and more brittle than traditional metal braces. They are often chosen as they are less noticeable on the teeth.

What To Expect

If you have been thinking about getting braces for yourself or your child, but don’t know what to expect, Diamond Plus Orthodontics has your answers as your go-to Chicago orthodontist! We want you to be confident in your choice.

We understand that choosing orthodontic treatment is an investment, which is why we are committed to helping Chicago residents get the most out of their treatment – starting at your free consultation!

Soreness

When you first get your braces you may notice that your teeth and mouth feel a little tender or sore. We promise your mouth will not be sore forever!

If your pain is severe and not diminishing after a few days you may take a pain reliever. It is not uncommon for your lips, cheeks, and tongue to become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become used to the braces. We will happily provide you with some orthodontic wax that you can apply over the braces to lessen the tenderness. If you need some wax, please let us know!

Eating With Braces

We’re sure you’ve heard that braces come with an adjustment period and part of that is learning what you can and cannot eat with braces! Don’t worry, you’ll be back to eating popcorn and snacking on hard candy again in no time. Before you start enjoying some of the treats you love, you will need to take special care to avoid any foods that could damage your braces.

Foods to Avoid With Braces:

Chewy foods
Crunchy foods
Sticky foods
Hard foods
